A safe bath at home between appointments
An occasional home bath can help with dirt and odor, but over-bathing or leaving shampoo behind may dry or irritate the skin. Preparation makes the experience safer and calmer.
Prepare before turning on the water
Place a nonslip mat in the tub, gather towels and keep pet-safe shampoo within reach. Brush the coat first because water can tighten existing tangles.
- •Use a leash or helper only if it keeps everyone calm
- •Keep cotton swabs out of the ear canal
- •Protect eyes and avoid spraying directly into the face
Wash and rinse gently
Use lukewarm—not hot—water. Follow the shampoo dilution instructions, massage with fingertips and rinse from neck to tail. Continue rinsing until the water is clear and the coat no longer feels slippery.

- •Do not use human shampoo or essential oils
- •Skip medicated products unless your veterinarian directs you
Dry without overheating
Blot with towels rather than vigorous rubbing. If your pet tolerates a dryer, use a cool or low setting from a safe distance and keep it moving. Make sure dense areas are dry to the skin.
If your pet has an active skin condition, open wound or ear infection, ask your veterinarian before bathing.
