Manage shedding without damaging the coat
Shedding is normal, and the goal is to remove loose hair without scraping the skin or breaking healthy coat. Consistency is safer than aggressive marathon sessions.
Understand the coat
Double-coated breeds have a protective outer coat and insulating undercoat. A pin brush, slicker or appropriate rake can lift loose hair, but sharp or overused deshedding blades may irritate skin and cut healthy coat.
- •Ask your groomer to identify the coat type
- •Check the skin every few strokes
- •Stop if you see redness or tool marks
Create a sustainable routine
Brush for a few minutes several times a week during heavy shedding. Follow with a comb where appropriate and clean the tool frequently. A professional bath and controlled blowout can release compacted undercoat safely.
- •Use a washable mat to contain loose hair
- •Keep water and breaks available
- •Do not pull at compacted coat
Notice changes
Patchy hair loss, itching, flakes or a sudden increase in shedding can have medical or environmental causes. Grooming can reveal the problem but cannot diagnose it.
Ask your veterinarian about sudden, patchy or itchy hair loss, especially with skin color changes, odor or sores.
